Obama then imposed economic sanctions against Russia, for “Russia’s aggression.”

Obama’s only statement of what “Russia’s aggression” consisted of, that has been even as lengthy as moderately brief — since he has never presented it at any more length — was his interview with Fareed Zacaria of CNN on 1 February 2015, which happened to be a statement given just three days short of the first anniversary of his agent’s, Victoria Nuland’s, having selected, on 4 February 2014, whom the next leader of Ukraine would be; it would be Arseniy Yatsenyuk (she called him “Yats”), as soon as the democratically elected and sitting Ukrainian President, Viktor Yanukovych, would become overthrown, which happened 18 days later, on 22 February 2014. (It was nothing like Czechoslovakia’s “Velvet Revolution”. This wasn’t democratic; it was a coup.) Obama seized Ukraine, and blamed Putin for “aggression” against Crimea — a “conquest of land.”

Obama said there, in this CNN interview, that the reason for the sanctions against Russia was that,

“since Mr. Putin made this decision around Crimea and Ukraine  not because of some grand strategy, but essentially because he was caught off-balance by the protests in the Maidan and Yanukovych then fleeing after we had brokered a deal to transition power in Ukraine  since that time, this improvisation that he’s been doing has getting  has gotten him deeper and deeper into a situation that is a violation of international law, that violates the integrity, territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine, has isolated Russia diplomatically, has made Europe wary of doing business with Russia, has allowed the imposition of sanctions that are crippling Russia’s economy at a time when their oil revenues are dropping. There’s no formula in which this ends up being good for Russia. The annexation of Crimea is a cost, not a benefit, to Russia. The days in which conquest of land somehow was a formula for great nation status is over.”

So, that’s how Americans learned about what caused Russia’s “conquest of land,” to seek “great nation status,” and Russia’s consequent punishment for “Russia’s aggression.”

It takes great comics like Frankie Boyle or George Carlin to begin to describe the level of hypocrisy and propaganda in US rhetoric like that above.

“…the days in which conquest of land somehow was a formula for great nation status is over.”

Yes, that is what an American politician would say – TODAY! (Notice, by the way, that for some unstated reason Obama is the universal authority who can decide when “those days” are over).

Back in the days when the conquest of land somehow WAS a formula for great nation status, didn’t the Americans just go to town? First they conquered the entire North American continent (south of Canada and up to the Mexican border). In doing so they killed untold millions of Native Americans whose land they coveted. Then they started an unprovoked war of aggression against Mexico, for the openly admitted purpose of stealing land from it. The theft was outstandingly successful, amounting to the entire states of Texas, California, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Nevada, and parts of Kansas, Colorado and Wyoming. Later, having rounded out its continental domain, the USA went on to annex Hawaii and the Philippines, and did its level best to conquer Cuba. And, of course, after WW2 the USA simply took over much of the Pacific. Although it does not formally occupy Germany and Japan, the behaviour of those nations’ governments clearly reveals that they are still conquered.

So NOW the USA can proclaim that “…the days in which conquest of land somehow was a formula for great nation status is over.” Although those days have apparently not quite ended in Palestine, where Israel conquered most of the choicest land as recently as 1948 and 1967, and still continues to inch forward, settlement by settlement. But of course that doesn’t count, because the USA says it’s OK.

Is it the entire executive branch AND the entire Department of State that is coup happy ?
What do you suppose is the percentage of federal employees that see the big picture,
disagree totally with the policy and practice yet participate because they have no other survival
option………Locked in to a career choice deal with the devil so to speak?

Honestly, I believe that it is not only everyone working for the government that tacitly approves, but most citizens too. Nothing is easier than to carry on with your own life while taking care to say nothing, and think nothing, about the terrible things your leaders are doing far away. When I was at school we were sometimes challenged to ask how “ordinary German citizens” could have tolerated the Nazi regime, with the assumption that they were all guilty and deserved to be firebombed. Today British, American, Australian, Canadian, French and German citizens are in much the same position, although they seem much less likely to be punished as the Germans were.
